Garneau sits at the south end of the High Level Bridge, between the University of Alberta and Old Strathcona. It is one of Edmonton’s older neighbourhoods, named for Laurent Garneau, whose river lot once covered much of the area.
The homes
Expect character houses from the early 1900s through the 1940s, many lovingly renovated, alongside newer infill and low-rise apartment buildings. Lots are often narrow, and mature trees shade most streets.
Getting around
Garneau is made for walking. Campus, Whyte Avenue and the river valley trails are all minutes away on foot, and the University and Health Sciences LRT stations connect you to downtown and the south side.
What to watch for when buying
Older homes deserve a careful inspection: knob-and-tube wiring, original plumbing and foundations can all need attention. Many homes have legal or non-conforming suites, so we confirm permits before you count on rental income.
